2026 Nobel Prize in Physics: Astrophysical Neutrinos
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics recognizes contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin. Light sensors in the clear ice at the South Pole record flashes produced when neutrinos collide with atomic nuclei, giving astronomy a new way to study the universe’s most energetic processes.
The laureate is Francis Halzen, who proposed using Antarctic ice as a giant detector and made decisive contributions to IceCube.
