The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi for the development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). By linking metal ions with long organic molecules, they created crystalline structures containing exceptionally large and adaptable cavities. These molecular “rooms” allow gases and other chemicals to flow through or be captured. MOFs can harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases, and catalyse chemical reactions — turning elegant molecular architecture into practical tools for major environmental and technological challenges.
